1976

When the state of Colorado began planning for its Colorado State Centennial celebration in 1976, Colorado City did too. The City of Colorado Springs needed to get rid of the declining Westside's blight, and so committed some resources to it. Others, wanting to base the revitalization on the dynamic history of original Colorado City, many "Westside" residents, civic leaders and small businesspeople joined forces to give what then became known as 'Old' Colorado City a boost. And, they succeeded. Spectacularly.

This section offers a view of the events that occurred, the individuals involved, the elements of history that were incorporated into it, and the stories that emerged.. It starts with a start look at just how run down was the original 3 block, 98 building commercial area, 50% of whose buildings were vacant on January 1st, 1976.
