Fred Roberts loved fresh buttermilk made by a woman living on Fountain Creek. Just thinking about her buttermilk made Roberts' mouth water. One warm day when Roberts was returning from the south, Roberts stopped at the woman's house for a fresh glass of buttermilk. When he walked into the house, Roberts saw a young boy, wearing only a shirt, sitting on top of the butter churn. After closer observation, Roberts noticed that the lid was not on the churn. The boy was obviously preventing the butter from splashing out. Once the woman finished churning, she poured the buttermilk into a clean bowl and gave Roberts a glass. But, Roberts had conveniently put a wad of chewing tobacco in his mouth and declined the milk, explaining that he had a stomach ache. From then on, Roberts passed the woman's house at night, never again stopping for his much loved buttermilk.
